Events: expert speakers fuel creative inspiration
Author: CIM COM
This June two events shine a spotlight on creative marketing communications. The New Theatre in Cardiff plays host to our next ‘Marketing inspire!’ event which looks at the devilishly difficult task of marketing the arts. Or come to the White House (in Bristol) to hear about the convergence of PR and marketing. Stephan Stockton MBE exudes experience with 30 years in arts marketing, while Chris Lawrence of JBP has presided over PR campaigns which have been recognised with industry accolades including Best PR consultancy in the region.
Marketing inspire! Marketing the arts experience
When Stephan Stockton started a career in arts marketing 30 years ago, he was called a Publicist. The Publicist distributed posters and talked to the press. That was it! Theatres now look at marketing an experience, and the experience starts long before you might think it does.
'I sometimes wish I were selling a Mars bar'
Unlike a Mars Bar, most theatres have no control over the quality of the production and have probably booked it into the theatre and started selling it long before it even goes into rehearsal.
This session looks at how theatres market their productions, how they develop real loyalty and relationships with their audiences, how they deal with expectation and when they have to sell a challenge.

Following Stephan’s engaging talk, he will conduct a tour of the stage and backstage areas of the New Theatre.

Apart from working as a General Manager and Producer, he is at heart a marketer and is proud to have won a CANMOL (CIM Wales Marketing Award) for one of his campaigns in the arts. He also works as a university lecturer at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, the University of South Wales and Bath Spa University, lecturing on management, marketing and behavioural psychology to both Masters and Under-graduate students.
He was appointed an MBE in 2011 and invited to become a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 2016. Previously he has been Chair of the Cardiff Council Standards & Ethics Committee, a panel member for Children in Need in Wales, and a Wales Board member of CIM.
He is currently a board member of a producing theatre company, and Chair & Trustee of 3Rings, an international charity providing marketing and management support to the voluntary sector. Stephan is currently working as Marketing Campaigns Manager at the New Theatre Cardiff and recently produced a Welsh tour of a new Ibsen production.
Explore the convergence of marketing and PR with JBP
JBP is a politically, business and community-led communications and engagement consultancy. It was established in 1984, the year that the FTSE 100 Index started, Band Aid’s charity single was Christmas number one and the Princess of Wales gave birth to Harry. Today, JBP is one of the leading strategic communications consultancies in the UK.
Regional Managing Director, Chris Lawrance is opening the doors to ‘The White House’ on Whiteladies Road to CIM members on Thursday 7 June, to host an informed debate amongst senior marketers on the convergence of PR and marketing disciplines with the rise of social media and influencer marketing for example. Chris will lead a discussion on the possible future of organisations involved in these two core communication disciplines and encourage thought and discussion from attendees.
Chris will reveal how JBP has embraced sector change, and the challenges it’s faced over the last three decades, to become the award-winning consultancy it is today, with offices in London, Warwick, Cardiff, and Manchester.
Chris oversees the development and implementation of PR campaigns across the business. Under his leadership, the Bristol office has secured industry accolades, including the best PR consultancy in the South West on more than one occasion.
Who should be there
This event is aimed at senior marketers. It’s suitable for marketers with responsibility for shaping their communications strategy, marketers who determine how their PR and communications are managed - internally or outsourced, and how their marketing teams align and work with their agencies and consultants.
