Digital innovation in the construction industry

Author: Dawn Southgate

Both the construction and agricultural industries are lagging behind on digital innovation. Lags in the construction field are put down to a fragmented value chain with lots of small companies. In the agricultural arena it is the ‘yearly’ cycles, access to the internet in rural areas then the myriad issues of the weather, water and soil all adding to the challenges. A survey carried out in North America gives a good snapshot of technologies and the benefits along with views of those surveyed and the likelihood of implementation. Contractors love the idea of predictive maintenance (over 80%) and other notable ideas were remote monitoring, digital aftermarket sales and connectivity to project-management software. Farmers love the idea of auto steering.
